Registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree often pursue advanced studies as a way to increase the number of job positions they may fill, as well as elevate their income level. A Master of Science in Nursing allows nurses to not only prepare for taking on a leadership role but to also study to become an educator or advanced practice nurse. There are plenty of MSN programs in Maryland, especially in Baltimore, which offers some of the options that a nurse can review when pursuing advancement within his or her career.
Schools With MSN Programs in Maryland
- The University of Maryland School of Nursing is home to an MSN program that offers a handful of concentrations for a healthcare professional to consider: Community/Public Health Nursing, Health Services Leadership and Management, and Nursing Informatics. The school also provides instruction for nurses to become a Clinical Nurse Leader through a master’s degree program that can take a 16, 21, or 23 months to complete – depending on the semester of admission. This 64-credit program is for RNs who have already earned a baccalaureate degree in a field other than nursing. Students are admitted for the fall and spring semesters for this particular program.
- Bowie State University has a Master of Science in Nursing program aimed to prepare professional nurses for doctoral study or to assume advanced practice roles. After completing more than 600 hours of clinical practice, graduates of the family nurse practitioner and nurse educator programs are eligible to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center national certification examination. Following two years of full-time faculty experience, nursing education graduates are eligible to take the National League for Nursing examination.
- The Helene Fuld School of Nursing at Coppin State University, located in Baltimore, grants an MSN with a Family Nurse Practitioner track. Students are required to complete a total of 48 to 51 credits in order to earn a master’s degree in nursing. Some of the courses found in the curriculum include Research in Nursing; Primary Health Care for Adults/Older Adults in the Family; Curriculum Development in Nursing Education; and Global Health: Problems and Issues.
- Offering one of the widest-ranging areas of study, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore is home to an exceptional MSN degree program with both on-campus and online learning opportunities. Aspiring nurse practitioners that attend the school will focus on learning how to provide better acute and primary care to the elderly, children, and families. Other nurses may attend the University to become clinical nurse specialists, administrators, nurse midwives, or a part of upper management. Johns Hopkins also has an accelerated BS-to-MSN with Paid Clinical Residency program that incorporates a one-year paid residency as a full-time inpatient nurse at a hospital affiliated with the school.
- The Department of Nursing at Towson University is home to an MSN program that serves the needs of RNs with a baccalaureate degree who are seeking a curriculum that offers both part- or full-time studies. The majority of courses are offered on weekday evenings so that working nurses can better balance their school and job responsibilities. After completing core nursing classes, students may choose one of the following concentrations of study: Nursing Education or Clinician-Administrator Transition. The school’s MSN program is also offered at University System of Maryland at Hagerstown(USMH).

- Become licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Maryland.
- Earn an MSN degree through an accredited program.
- When applicable, complete any requirements, such as supervised clinical hours.
