Schools With BSN Programs in West Virginia

  • Alderson Broaddus University offers a fantastic nursing program, which offered the first 4-year Bachelor’s program in the state of West Virginia. The BSN program offers comprehensive training, including hands-on clinical experiences and innovative classroom instruction. Those who complete the program will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination and will have a firm foundation to build on should they decide to continue their nursing education. The school also offers an LPN to BSN program and a flexible RN-BSN program for nurses who want to continue their education.
  • The BSN Program at Bluefield State College is an RN to BSN program designed for working registered nurses. The classes are given online while clinical experiences must be completed on-campus or at one of the healthcare facilities that partner with Bluefield State College. The program is a 120-hour program that typically takes 3 to 4 semesters to complete, depending upon whether the student is studying part-time or full-time.
  • Students have a variety of BSN options at Fairmont State UniversityFor the traditional BSN, 70 to 71 credit hours are required, but students also have the option of choosing the accelerated track, which is a highly rigorous schedule that requires 28 credit hours for registered nurses or licensed practical nurses who have not yet earned their Bachelor’s Degree. Prerequisite courses are required. Upon completion of the BSN program, students will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination.
  • Those in or around the Huntington area can take advantage of the famous Marshall University,which offers a fantastic nursing program. The school offers a traditional BSN program which allows students to gain practical skills by working with actual patients in a variety of healthcare settings throughout the community, including Cabell Huntington Hospital, River Park Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center. The school also offers an RN to BSN program online for registered nurses who want to earn their BSN degree. Clinical experiences will need to be completed in person.
  • Shepherd University in Shepherdstown offers both a traditional BSN program as well as an RN to BSN program. The traditional program requires 120-credit hours to graduate, 61 of which are core nursing courses. Students must complete all coursework within 3 years after enrolling into the program and in order to be considered, must submit to drug screening and a criminal background check. Those who complete the program will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination.
  • The University of Charleston offers up a high quality BSN program that prepares students for an exciting career. The school provides a liberal learning environment and emphasizes the “ethical, legal and evidence-based practice” of registered nurses. The program is a 4-year, 128-hour program and upon graduation, students will be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN examination. Nurses must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 to progress through the program.
  • At West Liberty University, students right out of high school can start the process of gaining their BSN degree to become registered nurses. Academic studies are combined with laboratory and clinical learning experiences in a variety of healthcare settings throughout the community. Also available at West Liberty is the RN to BSN program designed for registered nurses who want to earn their Bachelor’s Degree. The traditional program is a 125-credit hour program divided into 4 years.
  • West Virginia University boasts an excellent nursing school and a few different options for those who want to earn a BSN degree. In addition to the traditional BSN, the school offers a BS/BA to BSN program and an RN to BSN program. The traditional program is a 128-credit hour program, 68 of which are core nursing credits. Students have the benefit of learning in some of the most advanced healthcare facilities around the community, gaining hands-on experience that will serve them throughout their nursing career.
  • Through West Virginia Wesleyan Collegestudents can earn their BSN degree in four years, preparing them to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. In order to be accepted into the program, students must provide background check results, proof of CPR certification and proof of a health (TB) screening.
  • Individuals in the Wheeling area can earn their BSN degree from Wheeling Jesuit UniversityBoasting a 100% NCLEX-RN pass rate for the most recent academic years, this school offers an RN to BSN program as well as a BA/BS to BSN program in addition to their traditional Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing Program. The staff prides themselves on preparing nursing students for the “real world” through a comprehensive mix of academic and clinical learning.

West Virginia nurses who earn their Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing are often preferred by employers to nurses who have not. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that as of May 2013, registered nurses in the state of West Virginia earned an annual median salary of $55,240. Although this is slightly lower than the national average for this career, the continued increase in demand for nurses will likely translate to an increase in salary over the next several years.
