Whether you’re a student fresh out of high school who is interested in becoming a registered nurse, or you’re already a registered nurse who hasn’t yet earned your Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing, a BSN can certainly benefit your future. This degree makes job candidates more appealing to potential employers, and it allows individuals interested in higher education to progress to the next step. Registered nurses have exciting, fulfilling careers alongside doctors and other medical professionals in healthcare settings of all kinds. The first step to earning a BSN degree is enrolling in a great nursing program in Utah.

Schools With BSN Programs in Utah

Individuals in or around the Provo area can take advantage of Brigham Young University’s BSN program, a 91-credit hour program that is a limited-enrollment program. Classroom instruction is combined with clinical experiences to train nurses to become competent, qualified healthcare professionals. In order to progress through the program, students must maintain at least a “C” average.

Dixie State University of Utah offers a great BSN program that includes the typical classroom instruction, laboratory experience, and clinical experience. They also offer an RN to BSN program. Fully accredited by the CCNE, the nursing program at Dixie State is designed to give students the best possible advantage in their careers and lives.

Located in Cedar City, Southern Utah University has been helping create qualified and competent nurses for ten years. The admission process is competitive, and the university only accepts students who have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA in all prerequisites. Students can choose from the traditional BSN program as well as the RN to BSN bridge program designed to help registered nurses further their career and education.

Individuals have a few different options for their BSN degree with the University of Utah, including the traditional BSN program which moves at a typical pace, the accelerated BSN which takes place over 4 consecutive semesters. The school also offers an RN to BSN program that is primarily taken online, so it’s flexible enough for individuals who are attempting to work and earn their degree at the same time. Students who enter the traditional program can complete it in 4 years, but must complete it within 7 years of starting.

Utah Valley University offers a 120-credit hour BSN program that combines classroom instruction with clinical and laboratory experiences that make the student comfortable working with patients. Of the 120 credits, 84 are core nursing credits and 36 are general education credits. Individuals must submit to background checks as well as a drug screening to be considered for the program and upon completion, will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination.

Located in Ogden, Weber State University’s nursing program does not offer a traditional BSN program, but it does offer an RN to BSN program for registered nurses who want to earn their Bachelor’s Degree. This program can be completed in 2 to 3 semesters and is offered in a hybrid format. This means that most of the learning will take place online, but students will be required to meet on campus approximately 5 times per semester for face-to-face learning.

Western Governor’s University in Salt Lake City has a fantastic nursing program with options like the traditional BSN as well as the RN to BSN bridge program. The traditional program tuition is approximately $4,250 per six-month term, but this does not include additional fees and costs like those for the uniform, textbooks, travel, etc. In order to be considered for admission, students must present their TEAS scores to the school, currently have BLS certification from the American Heart Association, and pass a background check and drug screening.

Westminster College trains students completely new to nursing through the traditional BSN program and allows registered nurses to earn their BSN degree through the RN to BSN track. The nursing courses are grounded in liberal arts and the program features an excellent NCLEX-RN pass rate. It’s also considered one of the most affordable programs in Utah. The program is available at the Salt Lake City campus as well as in St. Marks.

Utah BSN Checklist

Complete the BSN program of your choice in the state of Utah and earn your degree.
Take and pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.
Apply for your license as a Registered Nurse (RN) through the Utah State Board of Nursing and include the $100 application fee.
Maintain your license by renewing before January 31 on all odd-numbered years. Be sure to include the $58 renewal fee with the renewal application.

Utah Nurse Salary & Job Outlook

Although nurses with Associate’s degrees and nursing diplomas are sought after in the state of Utah, potential employers tend to accept those with a BSN degree over those who do not have one. Earning this degree increases salary and allows nurses to progress in their education. The current annual median salary of registered nurses in the state of Utah is $60,090, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It’s important to remember that this is just the “median” salary – nurses with a BSN can earn as much as $96,320 per year, or as little as $45,630.
