Licensing Guide For each State

Whether one is looking to become a newly licensed nurse in the United States, maintain and renew a license, or transfer a license from one state to another state, there are very specific guidelines each state has created for this process. Each state is similar in it’s requirements but have difference. Thus it is important to research and keep up to date regarding your nursing license requirements. Below is a list of important links and information for each state that provide most if not all of the information for nursing licensing in the U.S.

Alabama

Alabama Licenses are renewed every 2 years.   Alabama requires 24 contact hours throughout those 2 years, as well as 12 hours of independant study through CE’s.

Alaska

Renewal is required every 2 years. In order to renew a license one must , finish 30 hours of CE’s, finish 30 hours of participation in professional activities or must have been employed as a nurse for a minimum of 320 hours.

Arizona

The Arizona nursing license is renewed every 5 years. The renewal does not require CE’s. However in order to renew the license it is expected that the applicant has worked 960 hours as a nurse in the last 5 years or has completed a refresher course in that timeframe.

Arkansas

Arkansas renews nursing licenses biannually.  Requirements for renewal are  15 contact hours,  or completion of a board certified nursing or health specific course.

California

The California nursing license is renewed every two birthdays.  In order to renew the license  the candidate must complete a mimimum of 30 hours of continuing education by a board accepted CE provider during those two years.

Colorado

The Colorado nursing license is valid for approximately two years.   The license will then expire on the 30th of september of the second year.  This state does not require any continuing education credits to renew the license.

Connecticut

The Connecticut nursing license expires anually, and must be renewed each year.  This state does not require any continuing education to renew a nursing license.

Delaware

The Delaware Nursing license renews Biannually.   Requirements for renewal are 30 contact hours every two years,  as well as 1,00 hours worked as a nurse in the past 5 years, or 400 hours in the past two years.

Florida

Florida currently requires 24 hours of continuing education.    The state has set fourth very strict expectations for it’s nurses, and requires specific courses to be completed every two years.  See the list of required courses in state’s license renewal page.

Georgia

The state of Georgia renews nursing licenses every two years.  Currently the state does not require continuing education for it’s registered nurses.

Hawaii

The state of Hawaii renews it’s licenses for registered nurses biannually, on June 30th.  Currently the state of Hawaii has no CE requirements.

Idaho

Idaho renews RN licenses every 2 years on August 31st.  The license currently requires no continuing education to renew.

Illinois

Illinois nursing licenses expire every other year.  The license is viable for up to 2 years, and expires on May 31st.   The state of Illinois requires 20 hours of continuing education every two years for license renewal.

Indiana

The Indiana Registered Nurse license expires every odd year on October 31st.  Currently the state of Indiana has no requirements for continuing education hours for license renewal.

Iowa

The Iowa Nursing license is renewed every 3 years.  This state requires 36 contact hours of continuing education, as well as a mandatory approved identification and reporting of child and elderly abuse course.

Kansas

The state of Kansas requires 30 hours of continuing education in order to renew an RN license.  This renewal process occurs everyt 2 years in this state.   All applications and deadlines can be found on the state board website.

Kentucky

Kentucky RN license renewals occur every 2 years.  The state has a very specific set of CE courses it asks it’s licensed RN’s to take every 2 years.  Those course requirements include 2 hours in an HIV/AIDS course, 3 hours in a domestic violence course, and 1.5 hours in a pediatric head trauma/ abuse course.   The total required hours for renewal are 14 hours of continuing education every 2 years.

Louisiana

In Louisiana the amount of continuing education required by the board of nursing to renew one’s license depends upon the type of employment each nurse is currently performing.  For full time work, 1600 hours per year, nurses are required to have 5 hours of CE’s.  For part time work, 160 hours per year, 10 hours of CE’s.  For less that 160 hours of work a nurse must complete 15 hours of CE’s to renew his or her license.   These CE’s are due annually.

Maine

Maine does not require any CE’s for their yearly license renewal.

Maryland

In the state of Maryland the registered nursing license is renewed once every 5 years.  The renewal requires use of the license in some sort of nursing field during those 5 years of at least 1000 hours.  Otherwise the nurse must take a refresher course that is approved by the board of Maryland nurses in order to renew his or her license.

Massachusetts

The state of Massachusetts requires all nurses to renew his or her license once every 2 years.   Within those 2 years, nurses are required to obtain 15 contact hours of CE training to renew his or her license.

Michigan

The Michigan state board of nursing requires 25 contact hours for it’s CE requirements.  These 25 hours are required to be be completed by all nurses renewing their licenses every 2 years.

Minnesota

The Minnesota RN license renews every 2 years.  During those 2 years nurses are expected to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education in order to be eligible for renewing their license.

Mississippi

The Mississippi Board of Nursing renews it’s state nursing licenses every two years.  The current renewal process does not require any continuing education.

Missouri

Missouri nursing licenses expire on 4-30 of each even numbered year.  The state currently requires no continuing education within that two year timeframe.

Montana

Montana requires all of it’s licensed RN’s to complete a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education within each license renewal period.   This license renews every 2 years between Nov. 1st and Dec. 31st.

Nebraska

The state of Nebraska renews RN licenses every 2 years.  The state allows different forms of meeting continuing education requirements.  These requirements include being employed as a nurse for a minimum of 500 hours, and completing 20 contact hours.   These license requirements can also be fulfilled by taking a nurse refresher course.

Nevada

The state of Nevada renews it’s licenses biennually, requiring nurses to complete 30 hours of continuing education during those 2 years.

New Hampshire

The New Hampshire nursing license expires anually, and must be renewed each year.  This state does not require any continuing education to renew a nursing license.

New Jersey

The New Jersey nursing license expires bianually, and must be renewed every 2 years.  This state requires a total of 30 hours every 2 years of continuing education by an accredited CE program.

New Mexico

The New Mexico nursing license expires every 2 years.  During those two years it is expected that each nurse completes 30 hours of continuing education course work.

New York

New York registered nurses are required to completer 3 contact hours of infection control every 4 years.   In addition, the state requires 2 contact hours  in child abuse.

North Carolina

The North Carolina nursing license expires every 2 years.  To maintain this license nurses in NC must complete 30 hours of continuing education.

North Dakota

The North Dakota nursing license expires anually, and must be renewed each year.  In order to renew one’s license the state requires 12 hours of continuing education.

Ohio

The Ohio nursing license expires bi-anually.  This state requires 24 hours of continuing education.

Oklahoma

The Oklahoma nursing license expires annually, and must be renewed each year.  This state does not require any continuing education to renew a nursing license.

Oregon

The state of Oregon has  initial classroom requirements of it’s nurses applying for licensure.  However it does not require any continuing education to maintain or renew the license.

Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania nursing license expires every 2 years, and must be renewed biannually.  This state requires 30 hours of continuing education ever two years.

Rhode Island

The Rhode Island nursing license expires every two years.  This state requires 10 hours of CE’s for license renewal.

South Carolina

The South Carolina nursing license expires every 2 years.  In order to renew one’s license in SC 30 hours of continuing education are required.

South Dakota

The South Dakota nursing license expires anually, and must be renewed each year.  This state does not require any continuing education to renew a nursing license.

Tennessee

The Tennesee nursing license expires anually, and must be renewed each year.  This state does not require any continuing education to renew a nursing license.

Texas

The Texas nursing license expires bienually.  This state requires all of it’s licensed nurses to complete 20 hours of CE’s.

Utah

The Utah nursing license expires every two years.  This state requires 30 contact hours from renewal candidates or 200 hours of patient care and 15 contact hours.  If the nurse has completed 400 patient care hours or more in the 2 years, no contact hours are required.

Vermont

The Vermont nursing license expires anually, and must be renewed each year.  This state does not require any continuing education to renew a nursing license.

Virginia

The Virginia nursing license expires anually, and must be renewed each year.  This state does not require any continuing education to renew a nursing license.

Washington

The Washington nursing license expires every 3 years.  This state requires a total of 45 hours of continuing education.

The West Virginia nursing license expires anually, and must be renewed each year.  This state requires 12 hours of CE each year.

Wisconsin

The Wisconsin nursing license expires anually, and must be renewed each year.  This state does not require any continuing education to renew a nursing license.

Wyoming

The Wyoming nursing license expires anually, and must be renewed each year.  This state does not require any continuing education to renew a nursing license.
